Front Door Colors in Florida Sun: Picking One That Holds
The front door is where many homeowners want a bold color. The sun has other plans for a dark door facing west. Here is how to pick a color that still looks right in five years.
People search “front door colors” about 9,900 times a month in the US, and the color searches lean dark: “naval front door” about 720 a month, “tricorn black front door” about 480, “urbane bronze front door” about 390 (Google Keyword Planner, US, October 2026). All three are deep Sherwin-Williams colors.
They look great. On a Florida door that gets the afternoon sun, they are also the hardest colors to keep looking great. Here is what to weigh before you pick one.
The number that matters: light reflectance value
Every paint color has a light reflectance value, or LRV. It measures how much light the color reflects, on a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white). Clopay, the garage door maker, rates its colors by LRV because “dark colors absorb more light and heat.”
Door makers draw a line on that scale. Simpson Door says “any paint with an LRV less than 55 is considered a dark paint color for exterior products,” and that dark paint absorbs more heat. Deep navy, black and bronze colors sit far below that line. Paint makers publish an LRV for each color; ask for it at the paint store before you commit.
Heat matters on a door because a door is a thin panel with sun on one face and air conditioning on the other. A dark face in full sun gets much hotter than a light one.
Read your door’s warranty before you choose dark
Fiberglass and steel entry doors carry their own warranties, and finish and color are often part of them.
- Simpson Door’s 2024 release announced it now covers dark-painted exterior doors under warranty, which tells you dark color coverage is a real question in the industry, not a given.
- Therma-Tru’s warranty page carries a footnote that excludes “installations within 5 miles of a body of salt water and the finish” from at least one of its coverages. Homes near Sarasota Bay, the Intracoastal or the Gulf may fall inside that line, so read the warranty for your exact door.
- If a glass storm door sits in front of your entry door, ask the door maker whether a dark finish behind it is covered.
None of this means you cannot have a dark door. It means checking the paperwork first, especially on a newer door.
Which way does your door face?
| Door faces | Sun it takes | Dark color? |
|---|---|---|
| North | Little direct sun | Safest place for a deep color |
| East | Morning sun, cooler hours | Usually fine |
| South | Sun most of the day | Think twice; a mid-tone holds better |
| West | Hottest afternoon sun | Hardest spot for a dark color |
| Under a deep covered entry | Shaded most of the day | Much more forgiving |
The EPA rates a UV index of 8 and up as very high to extreme and advises the most care from late morning through mid-afternoon. South and west-facing doors take the sun through those hours.
If you want a bold door anyway
- Pick a mid-tone version of the color. A slightly lighter navy or bronze still reads as a strong color from the street, with a higher LRV and less heat.
- Use a hard, glossy enamel. Sherwin-Williams’ sheen guide lists high-gloss for doors and trim, and semi-gloss as “great for trim and moldings.” Its Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel comes in satin, semi-gloss and gloss. A harder finish resists scuffs and wipes clean.
- Plan on touch-ups. A dark, glossy door in full sun will show wear sooner than the walls. That is normal, and easy to keep up with if you plan for it.
- Keep it off vinyl or PVC trim. Sherwin-Williams warns that a dark color over a lighter vinyl material can make it buckle, and it sells a separate VinylSafe palette for vinyl siding. If your door frame or trim is vinyl or PVC, ask before going dark.

How a front door gets painted properly
The door is judged up close, so the detail shows here more than anywhere. Our process: sand, fill and caulk every seam, then a hard Sherwin-Williams enamel, with lines cut by hand and drips caught before they set. Front doors are finished to hold their color in direct Florida sun, and every job carries a one-year warranty with free touch-ups.

02 Questions
Questions homeowners ask.
Can I paint a fiberglass or steel front door a dark color in Florida?
Check the door maker's warranty first. Door makers treat dark colors and heat seriously: Simpson Door, for example, counts any paint with a light reflectance value under 55 as dark for exterior products. A dark door facing the afternoon sun runs much hotter than a light one.
What sheen should a front door be?
Glossier than the walls. Sherwin-Williams lists high-gloss for doors and trim, and its Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel comes in satin, semi-gloss and gloss. A harder, smoother finish wipes clean and shows the brushwork less.
Why does my front door fade faster than the rest of the house?
It usually takes more direct sun than any wall, it is often a deeper color, and it is opened, touched and cleaned more. Deep, saturated colors show fading first. See our page on paint fading in Florida sun.
