How Do You Paint a Tray or Coffered Ceiling?

Decide where each color goes first, then treat the panels, the sides and the beams or molding as separate parts. One good plan puts color on the top panels and trim color on the sides, with wall color stopping below. Expect it to take longer than a plain ceiling.

This is for anyone with a ceiling that steps up or has a grid of beams, whether it is brand new or due for a repaint. It usually gets done along with the rest of the room, which is part of our interior painting service. A flat ceiling is a much simpler job, and most of this page will not apply.

Tray or coffered: what is the difference?

A tray ceiling has a center section set higher than the edges, with short sides around it. A coffered ceiling is a grid of sunken panels outlined by beams, as Block Renovation describes it. Some ceilings are both, like the one in the photos on this page: a tray with a coffered grid inside.

Where each color goes

Here are the plans the designers we read suggest. All of them work. It comes down to how much you want the ceiling to stand out.

PartSofter lookBolder look
Top panelsThe wall color or a lighter shadeA darker color than the walls
Sides of the trayThe wall colorThe trim color
Beams and moldingThe trim colorThe trim color, or a contrast

Kristie Barnett of The Decorologist gives a clear rule for a tray: darker color on the top flat part, a flat version of the trim color on the sides and undersides, and wall color only on the walls below. Houzz warns that a darker shade can make a room feel lower.

Before you commit, paint a sample overhead and look at it in sunlight and lamplight. Block Renovation points out that ceiling color can look different from the same color on a wall.

Why these ceilings take longer

A plain ceiling is one surface. These have many surfaces and many edges, and every place one color meets another shows from the floor. Cindy Dumas wrote that the custom coffered ceilings in the Dumas home, with an accent color and several layers of molding, took “precision, patience, and exact alignment.” The full review is below.

Beams can also be a different material from the panels. Block Renovation says beams are usually wood, MDF or a light composite, while panels are often drywall or plaster. So one ceiling may need more than one kind of prep.

We do not give one method for every ceiling, because the molding, height and old paint all differ. We look at yours first and tell you how we would handle it.

Which sheen goes where

Sherwin-Williams lists flat for ceilings and calls semi-gloss great for trim and moldings. Barnett prefers flat on the lower parts of a tray, even in the trim color. A shiny finish overhead catches more light, so ask your painter to show you both before the work starts.

A ceiling we painted in Lakewood Ranch

In October 2026 our owner, Zsolt Zakara, finished a brand-new home in Lakewood Ranch. The owner wanted tan walls in place of the flat white builder paint, and Zsolt painted the tray ceiling that was built onto the ceiling too.

New homes keep coming here. The East County Observer reports that Lakewood Ranch has new areas ramping up in its east, with more villages expected in late 2026 and through 2027.

Long Review but worthy of reading…An Outstanding Experience with Silver Painting & Cleaning LLC! When our newly completed home was ready for painting, we interviewed several painters before making our decision. Unfortunately, many wanted to spray the interior, while others provided estimates without even taking the time to see our home. Then we met Zsolt Zakara, Owner of Silver Painting & Cleaning LLC. From the beginning, he stood apart. Zsolt personally came to our home, took the time to thoroughly inspect the project, and carefully considered the details before providing his proposal. One thing that impressed us was that we wanted two coats of paint, but we never even had to ask. Zsolt brought it up himself, explaining that this is simply how a home should be painted. That told us a great deal about his standards and commitment to doing things right. Our home also included custom-built coffered ceilings with an interior accent color and multiple layers of decorative molding. This was a very detailed project requiring precision, patience, and exact alignment. As construction was completed, additional painting was necessary, adding even more work to the project. Throughout it all, Zsolt never complained about the additional work or the complexity of the job. He simply took care of it and did an absolutely amazing job. We could not be happier with the finished results. His professionalism, attention to detail, pride in his workmanship, and willingness to go above and beyond made this an exceptional experience. We highly recommend Zsolt Zakara and Silver Painting & Cleaning LLC to anyone looking for a painter who truly cares about the quality of his work. It is refreshing to find someone who takes such pride in doing things the right way!

02 Questions

Questions homeowners ask.

Should a tray ceiling match the walls?

It can. Houzz shows matching the tray to the walls as the softer choice and a different color as the bolder one. A darker shade can make a room feel lower, so test it first.

Can I paint only the panels?

Yes. The ceiling in our photos has tan panels with white beams. Test a sample overhead first, because ceiling color can look different from the same color on a wall.

What sheen goes on a tray ceiling?

Sherwin-Williams lists flat for ceilings and semi-gloss for trim and moldings. Kristie Barnett of The Decorologist prefers a flat version of the trim color on the lower parts of a tray, so ask to see both.

How much does it cost to paint a tray or coffered ceiling?

It depends on the size, the height and how many layers of molding it has. We look at the ceiling in person and give you a free written estimate.

Want a painter to look at it in person?

Tell us what you are thinking. You get a free on-site estimate, a flat written price, and a same-day answer, usually within the hour. No sales pitch.
