Emerald, Duration, SuperPaint or A-100: Which Exterior Paint for Florida?

People search “Sherwin-Williams Emerald exterior paint” about 5,400 times a month in the US, and “Duration exterior” about 1,600 (Google Keyword Planner, October 2026). Most of them are trying to answer one question: is the expensive can worth it?

We paint with Sherwin-Williams, so this is the shelf we choose from. Everything below comes from Sherwin-Williams’ own product pages and data sheets. The claims about mildew, fading and warranties are the manufacturer’s.

Coverage and dry times are from the data sheets (Emerald Satin, Rain Refresh Flat, Duration Flat, SuperPaint Flat, A-100 Flat). Other sheens of the same line can differ slightly.

What actually matters on a Florida house

Mildew. Shaded walls in our humidity grow mildew. Emerald, Duration and SuperPaint all state a mildew-resistant coating. That helps the new paint resist growth. It does nothing for mildew already on the wall, which has to be cleaned and treated before any paint goes on. See mildew on stucco.

Pollen and dirt. Florida walls collect pollen, dust and sprinkler grime. Emerald Rain Refresh is built around this: Sherwin-Williams says it is “formulated so dirt washes away upon contact with rain or water.” Emerald Exterior claims resistance to dirt pickup, and SuperPaint calls itself dirt resistant.

Sun. Emerald Exterior claims resistance to fading, and SuperPaint and A-100 both claim color retention. Deep colors still fade first, whatever the can says. See paint fading in Florida sun.

Stucco. This is where the lines differ most. Emerald and Duration are self-priming. Duration’s page says one coat for repaints and two for unpainted surfaces, and the Emerald data sheet says the same. SuperPaint’s data sheet calls for a coat of Loxon masonry primer or Loxon Conditioner on stucco, then two coats. So on bare or patched stucco, every line ends up primed one way or another. How far a gallon goes. SuperPaint and A-100 list 350 to 400 sq ft per gallon; Emerald and Duration list 250 to 300, at a thicker film. More square feet per gallon is not the same as more paint on the wall. Our Florida paint calculator works with either range.

How to choose

• Sound, painted stucco, similar color, a shaded or mildew-prone side: a self-priming premium line like Emerald or Duration can go straight on as a one-coat repaint.
• Bare, patched or chalky stucco: primer first (Loxon), then two coats. The finish paint matters less than that system.
• Walls that get dirty fast, like the side facing the sprinklers or a dusty road: Emerald Rain Refresh is designed for that.
• When covering more wall per gallon matters: SuperPaint and A-100 list 350 to 400 sq ft per gallon and still carry Sherwin-Williams’ warranties.
