How Long Does Exterior Paint Take to Dry in Florida Humidity?

On the can, exterior paint dries to the touch in an hour or two. In a Florida summer, the dew at sunset and the 3 o'clock storm decide the real schedule. Here is how to plan around both.

Ask how long exterior paint takes to dry and the label gives you a tidy answer. Ask in Sarasota in July and the honest answer is: long enough to be dry before the dew comes down and before the afternoon storm rolls in. That is what actually decides a paint day here.

What the data sheets say

Sherwin-Williams lists drying times on each product’s data sheet, measured at 50% relative humidity, in two temperature bands. Above 45 degrees F, which covers every Florida painting day:

ProductDry to touchReady to recoatAvoid painting if rain is expected within
Emerald Exterior Satin1 hour4 hours2 to 3 hours
Duration Exterior Flat1 hour4 hours2 to 3 hours
SuperPaint Exterior Flat2 hours4 hours2 to 3 hours

Every one of those sheets adds the same warning: drying and recoat times depend on temperature, humidity and film thickness. Florida is not 50% humidity.

Why Florida humidity slows everything down

Latex paint dries as its water evaporates. When the air is already full of water, evaporation slows, and the paint stays soft longer.

The bigger risk is the dew point: the temperature at which moisture in the air condenses onto surfaces. Sherwin-Williams’ data sheets say the air, the surface and the paint should all be at least 5 degrees above the dew point when you paint. Its application guide goes further: ideally the temperature should stay above the dew point “for at least 48 hours after application,” because “dew will form on almost everything as soon as the sun sets, and seep into the uncured paint.”

On the Gulf Coast the dew point runs high. The National Weather Service’s Tampa Bay office lists a record dew point of 82 degrees F at Sarasota-Bradenton. On a muggy evening, a wall that was painted late in the afternoon can be wet with dew before the paint has had its 4 hours.

The afternoon storm

The National Weather Service dates the Southwest Florida rainy season May 15 to October 15, with “frequent showers and thunderstorms.” Sherwin-Williams says most products need at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture settles on them.

Put those together and the summer paint day is simple: start once the morning dew has burned off the walls, and stop early enough that the last coat has its hours before the clouds build.

A Florida paint day, in order

  1. Wait for dry walls. Morning dew sits on shaded walls longest. Paint goes on a dry surface, never a damp one.
  2. Follow the shade. Paint each wall when the sun is off it. A wall in full sun can skin over too fast, and the same guide warns that extreme heat can dry a film before it has had a chance to form properly.
  3. Watch the radar, not the clock. If rain is expected within 2 to 3 hours, the data sheets say do not start that wall.
  4. Stop early. Leave at least 4 hours before evening dew or the afternoon storm.
  5. After heavy rain, wait. Sherwin-Williams suggests a minimum of one day after a heavy rain, and notes that masonry and wood absorb more water than vinyl or aluminum. Stucco is masonry.

Dry is not cured

Dry to the touch means you can brush against the wall. Ready to recoat means the next coat will not lift the first. Cured takes longer: the film keeps hardening after it feels dry, which is why Sherwin-Williams wants it above the dew point for 48 hours. The first days after a repaint are the wrong time to pressure wash the house, lean ladders on fresh trim or let sprinklers hit the new paint.

When the weather is on your side

The dry season, roughly October through April, gives lower humidity and fewer afternoon storms, and paint cures better. See the best time to paint a house in Florida for planning a repaint around the seasons.

How we plan exterior days

We paint with Sherwin-Williams, and as Sarasota painters we plan exterior work around the dry season and the daily weather: walls dry before paint, and the day ended before the storms. Every exterior job starts with a wash, scraping, mildew treatment, caulking and priming. See exterior painting for the full process.

01 Questions

Questions homeowners ask.

How long before rain can hit fresh exterior paint?

Sherwin-Williams says most products need at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture can settle on the surface, and its data sheets say to avoid painting if rain is expected within 2 to 3 hours. In a Florida summer, that usually means painting in the morning.

Can I paint the day after a big rain?

Sherwin-Williams suggests waiting a minimum of one day after a heavy rain, and the surface must be dry. Stucco and wood soak up more water from a soaking rain than vinyl or aluminum, so they need longer.

Is dry to the touch the same as cured?

No. Dry to the touch means you can brush against it. The film keeps curing for days after that, and Sherwin-Williams says the surface should ideally stay above the dew point for at least 48 hours after painting.
